Srinagar: A spontaneous shutdown amid protests and clashes was observed in Tral areas of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district against the thrashing of locals including an infant by forces.
Locals told news agency GNS that the forces last night barged into residence of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Mushtaq Chopan at Wagad in Aripal Tehsil and ransacked his house. They alleged that his age-old father was beaten to pulp and household items were ransacked and vandalized. The locals said that to protest forces action, they held a protest in the morning and blocked main road in Wugad.
“As people were protesting against the forces action, the soldiers arrived in the area and barged into residential houses, beating locals including an infant. They also ransacked houses,” said a local resident, adding that the action of soldiers triggered more protests and they spread to other areas of the Tral.
Reports said that many civilians including one infant were injured in the beating and some of them were hospitalized. Massive clashes erupted in Wugad and adjoining areas of the Tral against the incident while shutdown was also observed. Meanwhile, police denied its involvement in thrashing of the locals. An army official said that they were pelted with stones but added “we did not thrash anyone”.(GNS)
