Srinagar, November 14: Thousands of people on Tuesday attended the funeral prayers of two slain Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Sopore and Palhallan areas of Baramulla district in north Kashmir.
The two militants namely Toib Mir of Brath Kalan Sopore and Ashiq Bhat of Palhallan Pattan were killed in a brief shootout at Rajwar Handwara area of Kupwara district with police and army last evening. Bodies of both the militants were handed over their respective family members yesterday late night.
Meanwhile, thousands of people in both Brath Kalan and Palhallan today attended the funeral prayers of both militants amid massive pro-Islam and pro-freedom protests. According to GNS, the mourners also waved flags of Pakistan and shouted pro-militant flags. Both the militants were laid to rest amid sobs and tears.
A complete shutdown was observed in Palhallan and Brath Kalan Sopore to mourn the militant killings. In Palhallan, massive stone-pelting clashes raged throughout the day intermittently between protesters and government forces. The police used teargas to disperse the protesters.
A police official said the situation remained under control at Palhallan and stone-pelting was contained “effectively”.
