Srinagar, July 17: Three Lashker-e-Toiba militants were killed in brief gunfight with government forces in Anatnag village of South Kashmir on Monday evening.
A Police officer told news agency GNS that a joint team of army, SOG and CRPF had cordoned off Bul Bul Nowgam area following specific inputs about the presence of some militants.
As the joint team of forces intensified the searches, the militants, travelling in vehicle, were intercepted following an encounter ensued.
Three militants were killed in the gunfight and the sources identified them as Mudassir Hajam of Kokernag, Showkat ‘Lohar’ of Arwani Bijbhera and Jibran from Pakistan, all three from Lashker-e-Toiba.
The government forces have killed 102 militants hitherto, making it the highest number of killings in the January-July period in seven years.
The forces also have prepared a hit-list of several other militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen.
The slain militants included Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Bashir Lashkari who was allegedly involved in the killing of six policemen in south Kashmir and top Hizbul Mujahideen militant Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, he noted.
The forces and police are going after militants as part of the operation “hunt down” and on the basis of a “hit-list” of militants, said the official who refused to be identified.
The killing of 102 militants till July 12 makes it the highest number in the past seven years, the official said.
Earlier in 2010, the highest number of 156 militants were killed between January and July that year. Last year, 77 militants were killed during this period, 51 each were killed in 2015 and 2014, respectively, 43 in 2013, 37 in 2012 and 61 in 2011, according to the police data.
Civilian injured in Bijbhera
A 60-year-old civilian was injured after army allegedly opened fire at him in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district following an altercation.
Reports said that the injured civilian was identified as Mohammad Abdullah Ganaie and he was shot after he and other civilians had an altercation with soldiers over thrashing of a youth. He was shot in leg.
The injured was referred to nearby hospital for treatment and his condition is stated to be stable.(GNS)
